Window wells are more than just a frame for your basement windows, they are a critical line of defense against our extreme freeze-thaw cycles and heavy spring snowmelt.

At Refined Companies, we specialize in “Build-Ready” window well systems. Whether you are looking to bring a basement bedroom up to legal egress code or need to stop water from leaking through your window frames, we provide engineered solutions that last.

What Is Window Wells?

A window well is a semi-circular or U-shaped structure installed around a basement window that is located partially or entirely below ground level. It acts like a small retaining wall, holding back the surrounding soil to create an open space in front of the window.

Window Wells is commonly used for:

• Aesthetic & Landscaping Integration

• Boosting Basement “Livability”

• Emergency Egress (Life Safety)

• Foundation & Flood Protection

Most frequent questions and answers

If your window well is deeper than 44 inches (1.1 meters), building code requires a permanent, securely attached ladder to ensure a safe exit during an emergency.

Not necessarily. A window well is required if the bottom of your window sill is at or below ground level. However, if that basement room is a bedroom, it must have a window well that meets specific “Egress” (emergency exit) dimensions, regardless of how close it is to the grass.

According to the National Building Code (Alberta Edition), an egress window well must provide a clear, unobstructed space of at least 760mm (30 inches) in front of the window.

  • Important: If your window swings outward into the well, that 30-inch clearance is measured from the edge of the window when it is fully open, not from the wall.
