Professional Concrete Flatwork Services by Refined Companies

Concrete isn’t just about pouring mud. It’s about surviving -40°C winters and intense freeze-thaw cycles. Poorly installed concrete cracks, heaves, and scales within a few seasons.

At Refined Companies, we provide “Build-Ready” concrete flatwork that combines structural integrity with high-end finishing. Whether it’s a functional garage pad or a decorative backyard oasis, we build it to endure the Alberta elements.

What Is Concrete Flatwork?

Concrete Flatwork refers to any concrete surface that is poured and finished along a horizontal plane. Unlike vertical concrete structures (like foundation walls or pillars), flatwork focuses on surfaces you walk, drive, or play on.

Concrete Flatwork is commonly used for:

• Industrial & Commercial (The Structural)

• Outdoor Living (The Aesthetic)

• Pedestrian Pathways (The Functional)

 Vehicle Surfaces (The Workhorses)

Common Examples of Flatwork

The “sweet spot” is from May to September. We can pour in colder temperatures, but it requires specialized “winter mixes” and insulated blankets to ensure the water in the concrete doesn’t freeze before the chemical hardening process is complete.

All concrete has a tendency to crack as it shrinks during the curing process. To manage this, we install Control Joints (the lines you see in sidewalks). These act as “pre-planned” cracks, encouraging the concrete to break in a straight line hidden at the bottom of the groove rather than across the surface. Our use of heavy rebar reinforcement ensures these joints stay tight and do not shift.

Yes. In Calgary, the “freeze-thaw” cycle is brutal. Without a 4″ to 6″ compacted gravel base, moisture gets trapped under the slab. When that moisture turns to ice, it expands and lifts the concrete (frost heave), leading to major structural cracks. The gravel base provides vital drainage and a stable foundation.
